The Basics

Welcome to the PFU ASB!
The Very Basics

-What is PFU?
PFU stands for Pokemon Fan Universe and refers to the pokemonfanuniverse.com website. This message board is an extension of that website.

-What is ASB?
ASB stands for Anime Style Battling. What this means is that the STYLE of the battles are influenced most heavily by the anime. The various pokemon games - and even the manga - are all good references. But in most of the games the pokemon can only know 4 attacks at a time. In the anime - and in this league - the pokemon can use any of the attacks that are available to their species.

-So... what do you do here?
The PFU ASB is a place where pokemon fans can hold anime-style battles against each other. It's kind of like role-playing, with the referees being the Game Masters.

-What are pokemon?
If you seriously have this question then you might want to visit pokemonfanuniverse.com and do some reading there before returning to this forum.

Starting Out

Getting Started
Newcomers to the league automatically have $15 and 6 pokemon. To get your $15, go to The Bank of PFU and post a message saying that you are a new trainer and would like to open a new account. To get your 6 pokemon... keep reading.

Choosing a Starting Team
There are a few things to keep in mind when you choose your starting team.

-You can't choose any stage 1 or stage 2 pokemon. You have to start with a baby, basic or non-evolving pokemon. So if you want a Charizard - that's fine. But you have to START with a Charmander. If you want a Raichu then you can start with either a Pichu(considered a 'baby' stage) or a Pikachu(considered the 'basic' stage). If you want a pokemon that doesn't currently have an evolutionary path - like Tauros - that's fine. You can have non-evolving pokemon on your start team. If you need to check the evolutionary path of any official pokemon, go to The PFU Pokedex.

-This league DOES allow you to create and buy fake pokemon. But in order to do these things, you first have to finish at least two battles here. So there should not be any fake pokemon on your starting team.

-Certain official pokemon, a list is provided below, are currently banned from this league. So you can't choose them.

List O' Banned PokeMon:
RBY Generation: Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno, Mewtwo, Mew MissingNo is also banned, since it is considered a glitch of data rather than an actual pokemon.

GSC Generation: Unown, Entei, Suicune, Raikou, Hoh-Oh, Lugia, Celebi Smeargle is available for usage but is restricted to 15 permanent Sketch moves.

Advance Generation: Shedinja, Latios, Latias, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys

First Team Approval:
Once you have chosen a team of six pokemon, you need to post the information for approval in the Team Approval Tower. Post with this format:

[Name of the Pokemon] Species of the Pokemon (Gender)

So if you picked a male Whismur and named it Bebop then you'd post:
[Bebop] Whismur (M)

If your pokemon is one of the species that does not have a gender, you can put a U for ungendered.
So if you have a Porygon and name it Hacker then you'd post:
[Hacker] Porygon (U)

Why do we need to know this stuff? For battles. The species of a pokemon tells us a lot - what the pokemon looks like, its type, its evolutionary options and its moveset. The gender is good to know, in case an opponent uses a move like Attract and is also important to know if you ever want to breed your pokemon here.

The name is optional. You don't HAVE to name any of your pokemon but you can if you want to. Also, you can change the name of a pokemon at any time without having to repost for approval. Just try to keep it clean, otherwise the filters here will censor the name.

Once your pokemon have been approved in Team Approval Tower, you're ready to battle.

How to Evolve Pokemon:
The pokemon here don't have levels. So none of the pokemon in this league can evolve naturally by reaching a certain level. These are the ways that pokemon evolve:

-Win a battle. If you win a battle then you automatically get the chance to capture a new pokemon for your team OR to evolve a pokemon already on your team.

-Pay to have the pokemon evolve. There are currently three businesses where you can evolve your pokemon.

--The New Evolution Stone Sanctuary: The place to buy evolution-inducing stones and items.

--The Poketech Hotel: For happiness evolutions, trade evolutions and breeding.

--The Pokemon Dojo: A training place for all the natural evolutions.

If you are using a pokemon to battle, you can still evolve it. However the pokemon must start and finish all battles as the same species. So... You can evolve the pokemon but the evolution won't affect any battles that the pokemon is already in. When the pokemon starts a new battle, that's when it will be able to use its evolved form.

Continuing Team Approvals:
Anytime you buy, breed, capture or evolve a pokemon you need to post its information in the Team Approval Tower. The basic format:

-Say where you got or evolved the pokemon here and include a working link to the post that shows you buying/capturing/evolving the pokemon.
[Name of the Pokemon] Species of the Pokemon (Gender)

When a pokemon evolves:
-You CAN change the name.
-You CAN change the signature move.
-If the pokemon already has an approved signature move and you want to keep that, just repost the signature move info with the pokemons basic info. Since the pokemon has evolved, though, you can slightly increase the accuracy of and/or the damage done by the signature move.

Movesets

Movesets:
In this League a pokemon can use almost any attack from the full moveset available to that pokemon species. A full moveset includes the attacks learned naturally through leveling-up, attacks learned from Move Tutors, Egg Moves gained via breeding, the TMs, the HMs AND the pre-evolutionary chain.

So if you have a Persian, it can also use moves learned by a Meowth. The same applies to any evolving pokemon: they keep the movesets of their previous forms. This is a one-way street though. Until it evolves, a Meowth can not use any move that is unique to Persians moveset.

If you need to check the moveset of any official pokemon, go to The PFU Pokedex.

Keep in mind, though, that this is anime-style battling. So attacks won't work exactly the same as they do in the games. For example:

-The pokemon don't have levels here. So any move that did damage equal to the level in the game now does a fixed amount of damage.

-We don't currently use items here so moves like Thief and Covet are now pure attacks, they won't gain you anything extra.

-The pokemon here don't have set personalitys or characteristics. Yes, pokemon that are known to hover will still be able to 'levitate' but beyond that... Your Seviper will not Shed Skin to heal itself here. Your Shroomish has no Effect Spore.

-There is a certain amount of logic applied to these battles. Surf, for example, requires the presence of water(a pool, lake, river, ocean, serious rainstorm, etc) in order to work. Just be aware of that.

-Also be aware that virtually any move, regardless of power, can miss. Or be dodged. Or reflected.

If you'd like to view generic descriptions of how each attack should work here, check out The Attack List Feedback thread.

List O' Banned Moves: Certain moves are just too much of a pain to do the calculations for. And so, to make things easier for the battle referees, the following moves are currently banned:

-Hidden Power, Secret Power, Role Play, Skill Swap, Nature Power and Imprison.

-Be sure to read the details of any challenge before you accept it. Most battles - especially battles in tournaments and battles against Gym Leaders - will include a list of moves that are either banned or limited for the duration of the battle. Mostly these are the restriction of recovery moves, an idea of their types are listed in the Recovery Moves Classification Discussion.

Signature Moves

Signature Moves: Each pokemon on your team is allowed a signature move. The signature move is a fake move that you invent specifically for your pokemon. What this means is that the signature move should be unique unto your pokemon. Nobody else can learn it.

The first time you visit the Team Approval Tower to post your starting team, you just post the species, name and gender of each pokemon. You can also add a line, if you want, to indicate that the pokemon does not have a signature move yet. So if you had a male Whismur named Bebop then you'd put:

[Bebop] Whismur (M)
sig move: None

This allows your pokemon to be approved for use in battle more quickly. Plus it gives you time to study the pokemons moveset and decide what kind of move to invent for your pokemon. Once you have invented a signature move for you pokemon, then you go back to the Team Approval Tower and post for approval again.

This is the correct format:

[Name of the Pokemon] Species of the Pokemon (Gender)
Signature Move: Name of Move
Description:
Type:
Accuracy:
Damage:
Effects:

Details you need to know to make an acceptable signature move: -When you describe the move, don't compare it to official attacks. Be original. Don't just say that a move is 'like a combination of Mist and Agility' or something.

-Try to include details. If your pokemon creates any sort of hazard - causes vines to grow or summons darkness or whatever - then mention how tall the vines grow and how long the darkness lasts.

-In a battle, each trainer gives a string of 3 commands. Therefore 1 round of a battle = 3 actions per pokemon. If you want a signature move that has any sort of lasting effect then you need to know this so that you can say how long the effects last. Don't say that an attack puts the opponent to sleep for '15 minutes' or anything like that. Say that the opponent goes to sleep for 'at least 2 actions' or 'no more than 6 actions'.

-There are no dual type signature moves. So you may have a Grass type move but no Grass/Bug or Grass/anything else.

-The attack type should be compatible with the pokemon type. So if you have an Electric Pokemon... Then the signature move for that pokemon does not have to be Electric - it could be Normal or Poison or perhaps even Dark or Fighting - but it shouldn't be Ice or Water.

-The accuracy of a signature move can go no higher than 95%.

-The damage done by a signature move can be no higher than 25%.

-Be aware that if you have a baby or basic level pokemon, it won't be able to do as much damage as pokemon that have been evolved. Even though we don't have levels here... It is just generally accepted that a Dragonite is capable of doing more damage than a Dratini.

-For effects... You can include a percentage for status effects, if you want, but the main thing is to list each effect and it's endurance. So you can put something like '50% chance of raising attack power for 1-3 actions' or you could just put 'raises attack power for no more than 3 actions'. Whichever you prefer.

-Effects mean anything that happens to your pokemon - raises attack power, raises accuracy, healing, etc. Effects are also anything that can happens to the opponent pokemon - lowing accuracy, falling asleep, falling in love, confusion, poison, freeze, burn, paralysis, etc.

-Be sure to mention the attack range. Can this attack effect multiple opponents at once? Or does it only target one opponent at a time? Will it effect any allies or clones that may be on the battlefield?

-Also, with effects, include the action gap. The current standard seems to be '9 action gap between uses' but signature moves that do high amounts of damage may be limited to 'Can only be twice per battle.'

Take Note: No literally, take notes. Once you have gotten a signature move approved, keep a copy of that signature move saved somewhere. Because if you ever want to use a signature move in a battle then you will be expected to either copy-and-paste or link to the information.

Battles

In Order to Battle:
What you basically need: an approved pokemon to battle with, an opponent and a referee.

You can arrange battles in The Battle Dome.

If you are having a regular battle here, in this forum, then the referee will open a new thread to start the battle.

If you are battling in a tournament or challenging a Gym Leader then the new thread will be created in the Tournament and Gym Central subforum.

If you are having the battle in a chat room or via an instant messenger then your referee will need to post a copy of the challenge and the results of the battle in the Quick Battle Range thread.

If you KNOW ahead of time that you will be gone for more than a few days then you should post in The I Am Away Thread. This lets people know that you are gone and also prevents you from being disqualified from any incomplete battles which you become inactive in. However... It generally IS more polite for trainers to not accept or issue challenges right before they KNOW they are leaving. And if it is the referee who will be absent, it is recommended that the battle be turned over - if only temporarily - to the Emergency Squad.

Battle Limits:
There are limits on how many battles you are allowed to participate in at once.
-You may have no more than 3 regular forum battles at a time.
-You may participate in no more than 2 tournaments at a time.
-You may only challenge 1 Gym Leader at a time. Gym battles will take one of your regular battle slots so be sure to have space for it.

Challenges and Posting Order

Challenge Format:
The proper format for a challenge is:

Number of Pokémon to be used
Disqualification (DQ) Time:
*Damage Caps:
Post Order:
Arena:
*Weather Conditions:
*Restricted Moves:

Now then...

-The three listed items with astericks(*) beside them are NOT required information. You don't have to restrict any moves, specify weather conditions or have a damage cap if you don't want to.

-In any battle where the trainer hopes to use more than one pokemon (2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, etc) then you must also include how many pokemon will be out at once. So in the first line of your challenge... If you say 3 vs 3 then you must add either '1 out at a time' or 'all out at once'.

-Disqualification (DQ) Time is the amount of time you can be inactive in a battle before you are disqualified from the battle. If the DQ of a battle is 3 days and it is your turn to post orders then you have 3 days to do so. If you cannot give orders within 3 days then you will be disqualified and your opponent will win the battle.

-If the DQ of a battle is 3 days and both trainers have posted their orders then the reff has 3 days to post a write-up of the next round. If the reff doesn't post within 3 days then the trainers can ask for help from the Emergency Squad.

-Damage caps basically prevent One Hit Knock Outs(OHKO). A 25% damage cap means that the maximum damage per round can only be 25%, no matter what happens.

-Post order means that before the battle begins, the trainers must agree on who will send out pokemon first. So if you are making a challenge... You need to decide what you want to do. If you want to be the one who sends out pokemon first then say: 'I'll send out pokemon first'. If you want your opponent to send out first then in your challenge say: 'Opponent sends out pokemon first'.

-Arena: Describe the place where the battle will be held. Is there water? Trees? Grass? Rocks? Is this battle going to be inside a building or on a rooftop or out in a dark forest? When you issue a challenge, you have the right to invent any arena you want. But be careful. Think of your pokemon and their attacks. Also, try to be fair. If you give your pokemon too much of an advantage with the setting, nobody will want to battle you.

-Weather conditions are optional. Most people just mention the weather when describing the arena but in cases where the weather has the change to heavily influence the battle(thunder striking the arena, strong winds, volcanic activity, etc) the weather description gets it's own space.

-Restricted moves are moves that you want to ban or limit for the duration of the battle. Banned moves are ALWAYS banned so they don't have to be mentioned in every challenge. But if you don't want your opponent to be able to change the weather then you can ban weather-changing moves. If you don't want your opponent to be able to use Rest or Chill more than 5 times then you say so. Just remember that any move restrictions you make will also apply to your pokemon.

Posting Order: The basic idea here is to show that the trainers should take turns with giving orders first.

Reff: creates the new thread in the forum, posts a copy of the challenge that has been accepted and indicates that the trainers may begin.

Trainer #1: releases their pokemon first
Trainer #2: releases their pokemon and gives the first orders
Trainer #1: gives their pokemon orders
Reff: does the write-up for round 1

Trainer #1: gives first orders
Trainer #2: gives orders
Reff: does the write-up for round 2

Trainer #2: gives first orders
Trainer #1: gives orders
Reff: does the write-up for round 3

Trainer #1: gives first orders
Trainer #2: gives orders
Reff: does the write-up for round 4

Trainer #2: gives first orders
Trainer #1: gives orders
Reff: does the write-up for round 5

And in the end...

Reff: will declare the winner of the battle, give the winner the prize money and claim thier own ending pay for reffing.

Battles and Commands

Commands:
-One round = three actions. So you are allowed to make 3 commands per pokemon, per round. The most basic regular commands will look like this:

Name of your pokemon: Command 1 - Command 2 - Command 3

For battles where each trainer has only one pokemon out at a time, the trainers do not have to include the name of the pokemon. But it's a good habit to get into, so that when you're battling with more than one pokemon at once then you won't have any trouble keeping track of which pokemon is doing what.

-You are also allowed to give your pokemon alternative attacks. So you can tell your pokemon to do one thing if the first move doesn't work and to do something else if the first attack DID work, etc.

Name of your pokemon: Command 1 - Command 2/Alternative Command 2 - Command 3

-If you have more than one opponent out at once then you need to be aware of attack ranges. Moves like Swift, Surf, Sing, Earthquake, ThunderWave and Icy Wind can affect all of your opponents. But rather a lot of attacks are intended to hit only one opponent, so you will need to tell your pokemon who to aim at.

Name of your pokemon: Command 1(@ opponent name) - Command 2(@ opponent name) - Command 3

-You don't need to include movements in your commands. If you tell a pokemon to aim at a certain opponent, your pokemon will automatically - if able to and when necessary - get close to that opponent first.

-If a pokemon is low on health or suffering from a status impairment(burned, toxic, paralysis) then using Rest will allow the pokemon to recover health and status.

-Rest does not seem to do much to cure attraction. Rest also does not seem to help frozen pokemon with any consistancy.

-If a pokemon has been lured to sleep then it will usually take an attack from an opponent(or ally...) to wake it.

-If a pokemon is low on energy, using Chill will help it recover energy.

-Chill is a move that was invented by this League. You won't find it listed on any pokemons moveset. Because the command to Chill basically means 'do nothing', any pokemon can use Chill. To conserve and recover energy in battle, use Chill.

-Combos do NOT count as one move. If you want your pokemon to use two of it's attacks together then you have to realize that it's still two moves. But your pokemon will just use them so quickly that your pokemon will be left open and vulnerable for a move. On the positive side, using a combination might allow your pokemon to get the first strike.

Name of your pokemon: Command 1 + Command 2 - Command 3

-Two action moves like Solar Beam, Hyper Beam and Dig only count as one action unless specified in the beginning of the match.

-The attack Bide can be a two or three action move. Usually Bide is written like this:
Bide(collect energy) - Bide(release energy)

There is a limit to what can be put between the Bides. If you use another attack or defensive move between them, it might disrupt the Bide so... The most common addition is probably Chill.

-There are a few attacks that are continous. Any attack that, in the games, lasted for 2-5 actions... Can still last for that many actions here. But if you want a continous attack to actually be continious you have to say so by putting it repeatedly. So, for example:

Name of your pokemon: Rollout - Rollout - Rollout

Or you could do it the simplified way:

Name of your pokemon: Rollout x3

Battle Etiquette:
Some things to keep in mind once you're battling.

-Pokemon do not evolve in battles. Let's say you have a Machop on your team. You send the Machop into a battle and that battle ends up taking a while. During that time, you have the Machop evolved into a Machoke. Great. Congrats. But in the battle... It is still a Machop. You can't use it as a Machoke in that battle. To be fair, a pokemon must start and finish a battle as the same species.

-Pokemon do not gain signature moves during battle. This time, we'll use a Butterfree for an example. Butterfree is an approved pokemon on your team but you haven't invented a signature move for it yet. You send your Butterfree into battle. If you invent a signature move for Butterfree and get that signature move approved - congrats. But Butterfree can't use the signature move in the battle that's already in progress. To be fair, we can't allow trainers the chance to exploit an opponents weakness this way. If a pokemon starts a battle without having an approved signature move then they must end the battle without using any signature move that gets approved while the battle is in progress.

-In case you missed it earlier, there are no items in this league. So you can't use potions or berries or anything to heal your pokemon during a battle.

-After a battle, all pokemon are automatically healed.

-Make sure you agree to ALL the conditions of a battle before accepting a challenge. If you have questions about a certain move restriction or want to have some changes made to an arena or DQ... It's best to get that sorted out before the battle begins.

Money Guide

Starting Out: As a newcomer, you automatically have $15. All you have to do to get that $15 is go to the Bank of PFU . Post a message saying that you are a new trainer and would like to open a new account.

The Business Directory:
So why do you need money? Well... The first six pokemon you choose - your starting team - they're free. But if you want to evolve or breed those pokemon, it costs money. If you want to buy new pokemon, it costs money. Here's a list of the places where you can spend your hard-earned savings.

-Team Faulks Black Market: Where you can buy new pokemon.

-The PFU Trade and Sell Depot: Where you can buy used pokemon.

-The New Rental Tower: Where you can rent pokemon.

-Pokeventure Park: An rpg-style business where you can capture wild pokemon.

-The New Evolution Stone Sanctuary: The place to buy evolution-inducing stones and items.

-The Poketech Hotel: For happiness evolutions, trade evolutions and breeding.

-The Pokemon Dojo: A training place for all the natural level-up evolutions.

-Pokepal Signature Invention Industry: Where you can pay to have someone else invent a signature move for your pokemon.

-The PFU Betting Track: Here you can place bets on trainers.

-The New Species Shoppe: If you get a fake pokemon approved for usage then you can purchase the fake pokemon here.

Free Services:

-Team Approval Tower: Any pokemon that you own - and any signature move that you want those pokemon to have - gets approved here.

-The Battle Dome: Post challenges and arrange battles here.

-The Challenge/Profile Archive: Store your profile here. Your profile should have things like a list of the pokemon currently on your team and your battle record. Battle records can include the number of battles that you are currently active in, a copy of any challenges you've issued and the total number of times that you have won, lost or tied.

-The Bank of PFU: Where your bank account is. Post here each time you earn or spend money.

-New Species Approval: Where you can submit a fake pokemon species for approval.

-The PokeItem Attic: To keep track of any items you may have. (Vouchers for businesses, etc..)

Business That You Won't See Here:

-All pokemon are automatically healed after a battle. So there is no need for a PokeCenter.

-Pokemon here don't have actual levels since that would be too much of a headache to keep track of. So there's no need for any DayCare or Nursery facility for leveling up.

-Pokemon here can automatically use any move from their official moveset. This includes moves learned via breeding, egg moves, Move Tutor moves, TMs and HMs. Plus you get to give each pokemon a signature move. So there's no need for a Move Tutor type business.

-Trainers here don't use items. So there is no need for a PokeMart type business to sell berries, pokeblocks, potions or hold items.

-The Pokemon here are, apparently, immortal. Or rather, they're available to battle for as long as their trainer remains semi-active here. They don't have lifespans. So there's no point in trying to open a PokeMon Graveyard.

-Contest House ideas have been rejected repeatedly. I think it has to do with the scoring system, the ability to find an impartial judge and the general pointlessness of a contest in a level-free battling league. So... I doubt the ASB will ever include a Contest business.

Ways to Earn More Money:
Now that you know what you can and can't buy around here, the question of how to increase your income might occur. So here's a list of ways to increase your income.

-Battle Prizes
Challenge someone to a battle. If you lose the battle, you don't get anything - but you don't lose any money either. If you win the battle, you get $6 for each pokemon that you used. So if you used 1 pokemon then you get $6. If you used 2 pokemon then you get $12. Plus, most battles have additional prizes.

--Regular battles: In addition to prize money, you get the chance to either evolve one of the pokemon on your team or capture a new baby-or-basic stage pokemon. Most regular battles are held in this forum, however quickie battles can be held either in the chat room or through AIM/MSN.

--Tournament battles: Tournament battles have regular prizes but if you manage to win a tournament then you get some extra prize money, a few extra chances to evolve or capture pokemon and, of course, the title of Tournament Champion.

--Gym Challenges: If you can defeat a Gym Leader then in addition to the regular prizes, you get a badge and a TM. If you defeat enough Gym Leaders then you gain the right to become a Gym Leader.

-Reffing
Reffing a battle can earn you between $10 and $25 per week - depending on your level of reffing experience - plus $4 for each pokemon used at the end of the battle. (So in a 1 vs. 1 battle, the reff makes $4 at the end. In a 2 vs. 2 battle, the reff makes $8.) To find out more about how to become an approved reff you need to go to the Reffing Line Up.

-Emergency Reffing
Once you are an approved reff, you can also join the Emergency Squad. Emergency Reffs basically provide a reffing in a forum battle when the regular reff is unable to. Emergency Reffs earn a few extra $ for reffing on short notice.

-Sell a pokemon
You can sell any pokemon that you no longer wish to own at the PFU Trade and Sell Depot.

-Place a bet
At the The PFU Betting Track, you can place bets on trainers. If the trainer that you bet on wins their battle then you will win some money. How much money depends on two things: 1)the amount of money that you bet and 2)the odds against the trainer. The higher the odds against a trainer are, the less likely it is that the trainer will actually win the battle. But the higher the odds against the trainer, the more money you can make if they DO win. Of course, if the trainer that you bet on loses then you get nothing. Still... This can be considered a possible source of income.

-Get hired
As far as I know, none of the business owners are currently seeking employees. However if you do manage to get hired on at one of the existing businesses then you will be entitled to share in the profits of that business. Of course, you'll also be expected to work.

-Open a new business
Have an idea for a new business? Go to the The Chamber of Commerce thread. If you idea is approved then you can open your own business. While this is a good way to earn money, it does come with certain responsibilities. New businesses typically require a loan from the bank, a business account at the bank and a whole lot of your time to run.

-Approver
Have a new pokemon? Or an evolved pokemon? Or a fake pokemon? Or a new signature move? Or an idea for a business? Want to become Reff? In order to do any of these things, you have to post for approval. And who does all the approving? The approvers, of course. And the approvers get paid for their work. At the moment, we have a relatively small group of people who seem to be doing all the approvals here. Most of them are senior members who are fairly knowlegable on the workings of this league and on pokemon in general. Currently there isn't any specific way to become an approver - no test to take or anything. The best advice seems to be... Stay here a while, play by the rules, learn what you can, help out where you can and earn the respect of the senior members.
